Srinagar: Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season as the minimum temperature settled at minus 7.7 degree Celsius against the last nights minus 7.7 degree Celsius.
After December 7, 1990, when the minimum temperature had dropped to minus 8.8 degree Celsius, the city recorded the coldest December night at minus 7.7 degree, breaking previous night’s record of minus 7.6 degree, an official of the Met department told Kashmir Reader.
Water taps, lakes, ponds and other water bodies are frozen in and around Srinagar.
Meanwhile, the officials at Kashmir’s MeT department have told Kashmir Reader that the teeth-chattering cold that has gripped Kashmir Valley since the spell of Chillai-Kallan (severest phase of winter) begun, will continue for the next ten days.
They said that both hilly and plain areas will remain in the grip of the cold wave with the possibility of snowfall in the first week of Januray, though in hilly areas only.
“After snowfall there will be a rise in temperature. As there is no likeliness of it in the plains, the cold will remain,” he said.
The traditional Chillai-Kalan lasts 40 days in Kashmir, from December 21 to January 31. The Chillai-Khurd comes next, for 20 days, followed by Chillai-Bachi for 10 days. During the Kalan, temperature dives into minus.
